Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer: So… How’s It Going? | |
| Nick de Bruyne - November 11th, 2009 at 1:00 pm - 931 Views - 35 Comments |

Yesterday saw possibly one of the biggest videogame releases like, ever. A whole bunch of controversy has surrounded the title for the last couple of months and mostly due to multiplayer features that people didn’t agree with.
We already had a pretty lengthy multiplayer session last night but we want to hear from our readers this time. What’s it like on the different platforms? What do you PC people have to say about the online now that you have tried the matchmaking instead of servers, anyone having any issues or does anyone have something awesome they want to share?
Hit us up with some comments, the good, the bad and ugly. Let’s hear it.

From the looks of things last night, on the Xbox version, it didn’t seem possible to keep games fully private. People from friends’ friends’ friends lists were just jumping right in

XBox360: No lag on local games (384 adsl unshaped), many new players from that weren’t around for the COD4 fragfest. A large bucket of WIN!

The games we played last night were awesome. As self-confessed COD-aholic, i am thoroughly impressed and happy. I can only speak for the Xbox version here.
The thing where people can join your game after you turned join during play “off”, is exactly the same as COD4, you need to actually set this inbetween every single round, because it will constantly reset it the moment you head back to the lobby.

COD4 seems to have some issues on the PS3
http://www.justpushstart.com/2009/11/11/modern-warfare-ps3-multiplayer-totally-unplayable/
I don’t think that ALL PSN games have issues but it seems like there’s more issues with PSN than XBL.

I’ve been playing on PC, multiplayer, for the past 5 hours straight. It is undeniably awesome. Almost all were local games as well, theres a steam group called Modern Warfare 2 SA and once u join u can check ur friends list for when any of them are playing and join their game, so most of the time it will be local! Only problem is one of the players has to host, (same as consoles i think) and that chows the cap hehe

Can you find games? Or do you have to know someone who is on a friends list?
November 12, 2009

If u join the Group Modern Warfare 2 South Africa on steam it adds all the players in the group on your friends list under that group name (usually near the bottom). Then u can click their name and say join, or u can just add them to your friends list (easier i think)

I played on Xbox and did not have too much problems. Had a lobby problem where I hosted a game but it did not want to launch. I dropped and joined again and the game launched. I was not the host anymore.

Its amazing how 384 guys suffer more than the guys with HSDPA, yes i know we have better upload and download speeds but NAT’s are moderate and latence is higher too.

did you hear EA is moving over to online only

console gaming is not making money
oh one more thing did you hear about facts on so called pircay
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/61203
TIGA, a trade association representing the UK games industry, recently surveyed its members about the rising impact of software piracy on game developers, and whether or not it threatens the survival of their businesses. Not all implies smooth sailing, but the results are mostly positive.
Gamesindustry.biz reports that ninety percent of those surveyed showed broad agreement that piracy is a growing issue, but some of the survey’s other findings aren’t necessarily what you might expect. For example, of the 90% that feel piracy is a growing threat, only 10% of that group said they felt it posed a considerable threat to company viability. Sixty percent indicated that piracy, although an issue, does not pose a serious threat to their businesses.
When asked about the (admittedly controversial) possibility of attacking pirates via government intervention – by effectively limiting broadband usage – the results were quite polarizing. Half those polled liked the idea, while the other half opposed it.
The recent survey appears to be in line with another poll conducted by TIGA in September. According to the September report, the majority of responders stated that they expected their businesses to show measurable improvement or growth in the next 6 months, while only 6% expected some degree of decline. However, it’s also worth noting that in the very same survey, 47% predicted a financial decline over the same period, and only 41% foresaw an increase.
Richard Wilson, TIGA’s CEO, believes there are some sensible conclusions to be drawn from the recent responses. “Developers are not complacent in dealing with this problem and are mostly seeking to find solutions for themselves,” he stated, “rather than simply relying on the government to solve the problem of piracy.”
I guess the gaming Industry and media is full of alot of lies huh

How do the international games fare?
November 11, 2009
5:47 pm
I joined an international game last night on Xbox Live and was surprised that it found me a game with very decent lag (sounds like it was a UK game). Granted I am on a 4mbps line using iPeg’s Unshaped, which obviously helps but still, really playable.
I did like the way that it matchmakes though, it first looked for games with a under 100ms ping, then goes from there.
