Team Fortress for instance was release on October 10, 2007 and is still receiving new content... just last month an update for the Sniper & Spy was release. I think the fact that things that were promised was never delivered (L4D has had only 1 major update since it's release and this release didn't have any of the initial promised content).Gamers are just a very volatile bunch o' peeps, I guess.
