Excuse me while I wipe a laugh-induced tear from my eye. What does $50 million buy you these days? Not a whole bunch apparently, as it’s been confirmed that once Xbox 360 exclusive DLC episodes will be available for PS3 and PC.
That’s right folks, you’ll soon be able to play The lost and the Damned as well as The Ballad of Gay Tony on your non-Microsoft platform.
"It’s been a long time coming, but we are proud to finally deliver Episodes From Liberty City for the PC and PlayStation 3," said Rockstar president Sam Houser. "We appreciate the patience of our PlayStation 3 and PC fans worldwide, and we look forward to putting the games in your hands this March."
Both episodes will be available together on one disc on March 30. The PS3 version will be hitting retail at US$39.99, with the episodes individually available on the PlayStation Network for $19.99 a piece. The Lost and the Damned enjoyed a year’s exclusivity on the 360, with The Ballad of Gay Tony was released last October. If you’re unsure about jumping back in to Liberty city – they’re well worth getting, and a lot more focused than the game proper.
If you ask me, timed exclusives are silly – and doubly so when they cost the education budget of a developing nation. It’s also the equivalent of 15,384,600 Big Macs – which could have been used for something purposeful instead of being squandered, like to build a submarine out of burgers…

$50m? (Are they JUSS)
I thought this game would be awesome but I never even finished it.
I lost interest in it, as it got too damn boring.

This is the single most exciting news today, I was seriously considering buying the xbox 360 version when it first launched, but (sadly) work kept me busy and I knew I wouldn’t have time for the two episodes, now I can just wait a few months, and get Ballad of Gay Tony and Lost and the Damned for the PS3.
So… $50 million, buys you the ability to delay content by about a year and a half on your competitor’s console?
, and here, I thought MS was adamant that they truly scored EXCLUSIVES.
It’s all rather deliciously pathetic.

wonder what this means for Agent? will that also be a timed exclusive?
glad to hear the news though.

From what i remember Sony doesn’t pay for exclusives in the same sense that Microsoft does… Sony likes to offer other incentives for developers.

In the end its all about money. With both MS and Sony’s consoles holding big chunks of the gaming market ( sorry Wii players ) it would be natural for Rockstar to try to make more money. I think the era of exclusives will be relegated to a handful of titles by year’s end.

Now, I’ll just wait for the news that Mass Effect 1 and 2 are coming to PS3. I know EA caught a lot of hate when they bought Bioware, but if it means EA’s foaming at the mouth because of the prospect of dipping its large demonic head into some wallets, and thus releasing Mass Effect for PS3.
I’ll be a happy a camper.
I’ll even buy the first Mass Effect again and gladly play it on the PS3.
@Easy: That’s the big question, but I guess it’ll also be a timed exclusive.

I highly doubt Mass Effect will go to PS3.. It is a “Microsoft studio games” so in a sense it is an exclusive. to Microsoft OS and Consoles. Think about it ou.. Have you ever seen a “Sony Computer Entertainment” Game on Xbox 360?
didnt think so

The first one was an MS game – the second game is published by EA, as they own Bioware.

Why no “PC” in the heading ? PC will outsell both other platforms in SA?
January 29, 2010
1:25 pm
Oh! That would explain the general lack of PC game variety in stores these days, because they’re constantly out of stock?
Actually, Dark, PC gaming sales in South Africa hasn’t been all rosy the last few years (it’s still struggling from the piracy abyss of the late 90s and mid 00s).
At this moment, ignoring the obvious elephant in the room, Sims 2 and Sims 3, console and console games are the true money spinners in SA.
As for the die-hard, “balls to the wall” PC gamers, they’re still out there, but it’s definitely a minority.

I dunno…I think Dark may know a thing or two about videogame software sales.

*Pouts* But I can never find PC games in stores any more.

haha I beg to differ if a game is release on all 3 platforms. Xbox-360/PS3 and PC. PC will easily outsell the latter.

It sounds as if you’re saying that PC will outsell itself…

IT is facts the PS2 is still selling strong in SA i wont denie it, but we are going to see a heavy fall in 360 hardware sales soon. I for one vowed i will not buy another 360 after this one fails lol
January 29, 2010
1:51 pm
Well bobby I think there lies the issue that there maybe arent AS MANY games coming out on the platform but when they do PC is tops.
eg.
MW2 PC>PS3>Xbox-360
GTA IV PC>PS3>Xbox-360

But than it boils down to game-specific, however, overall software sales (and that include shovelware) consoles are trumping PC software sales.
We’ve just misunderstood each other, I thought you meant in terms of total game sales, but if you mean specific game sales (like GTA and MW2) then yes, PC sales for those specific products will be higher than their console counterparts (because of the price differential).
January 29, 2010
2:29 pm
Actually the SA scenario is with regards to platform.
Units Sold
PS2>PC>PS3>Wii>Xbox-360>PSP>DS
January 29, 2010
2:39 pm
And the PS2 is a console, no?
January 29, 2010
2:48 pm
Thanks Dark, those are some interesting stats, so the PS3 is beating the Wii and xbox 360 in South Africa?
Incredible. Do you reckon people are still feeling burnt by what happened with the Gamecube, and thus struggling to embrace the Wii and DS?

Bobby yes PS3 is outselling Xbox-360 and Wii software albeit not by a large margin however its growing at a staggering pace. Ill contribute that directly to brand loyaly there has been an astronomic volume of PS2’s sold into SA and as any other strong brands consumers tend to stick to what they know best. Dont underestimate the size of the mass market vs Enthusiasts like us. They dont always know better :) hahahaha (I like Xbox-360)

What about year on year.
It’s easy to believe PS2 and PC are at the top if this is lifetime sales…

It’s not lifetime..it’s average per title.

People still buy games on PC and PS2?
Wow.
January 29, 2010
4:09 pm
Um yes PS2 is still big you forget games you may find shyte the casual market may enjoy. Kiddies lines are by far the biggest sellers on PS2, think of Kung Fu Panda, Shreks, Ben 10, Bakugans. Ps2 will outsell other platforms 6 to 1. (But yes thats kiddies lines) Back catalogue titles are also huge on PS2. Guys there are around 46 Million people in SA granted a much smaller portion can activly indulge in gaming but its much larger than the communities that frequent this website and others if you get the direction Im taking this :)

Every single kid I know in the age range of 5-12 owns a copy of Ben 10 on the PS2. I know of some families that have multiple copies, so there’s no fighting.

Actually those are 2009 software figures. So Lazy please include PC in your next title please it is important :)
