Bionic Commando Gimped on the Arcade

Lazygamer - February 29th, 2008 at 10:26 am - 367 views - 10 Comments

Xbox Live Arcade

Due to the Xbox Core/Arcade not having a hard drive the Xbox Live Arcade games have always been given a size limit. Mainly so that they can fit on memory cards.

However Microsoft may soon rue that decision as the PSN service does not have the same problem and now cross platform games are starting to suffer on the 360.

The first casualty is Bionic Commando. According to the developers the 360 version is not going to have the same high definition graphics as they couldnm’t fit them into that size limit. So if you have a PS3 it is obviously a better idea to download the game onto that console.

Ouch! I’m kind of gratefull for the size limit since in SA bandwidth doesn’t come cheap. Pity the games is gimped

How gimped is gimped?

It’ll play exactly the same, just some objects will have slightly fuzzy textures, Which is absolutely meaningless to me at 480p, and it’ll probably be nearly indecernable at 720p as well.

The 150Mb limit is to keep arcade games as quick downloads and impulse buys, which I think is great. It does however leave a gap for bigger games like say something like warhawk, which is bizarre considering they do offer full Xbox 1 game downloads.

hmmm… interesting, but i think this no hard drive business that the xbox has is a lil bit silly, i mean, if they had put in a simple 10 gig hard drive in the core/arcade then there would be no stopping the xbox at all, but i guess things have a way of balancing out.

now, I’m not looking to aggravate xbox users, but if the graphics are starting to suffer because of size problems at this early stage of the consoles life, then whats gonna happen next?
I mean, say some long as game, with amazing graphics was released, then there would be a serious problems for the xbox…

But then again, i suppose they would release dual dvd’s where you play until halfway, then you pop in the other dvd and you play on.

as for the game downloads, I don’t know what they gonna do…

If Street Fighter 2 HD is the same story then I am getting myself a PS3. I have been waiting in anticipation for that one and I ain’t gonna play no gimped version.

As much as I like the 360 and truly wanted it to beat the PS3 I don’t think it is going to happen. And it is all because of MS’s arrogant, authoritarian attitude.

it’s the same story as the psp… most of the games where gimped because the developers only had 1.8gb’s to play with. So Sony has learned a lot about what to do. Yes, the built in Blu-ray my be expensive, but it’s really quite simple. Most new HD games, ARE going to be bigger then a standard dual layer dvd, so 8gb’s simply isn’t enough.

The thing about multiple disks, is, the fact that there will be killer load times, and it would be annoying.

ag, lets see what the future brings

Yes and no, I don’t think it’s a case of “arrogant attitude” XBL Arcade is designed as a service for quick download, pick up and play games more than 150Mb, and that’s no longer the case. As I said though, it does leave a huge gaping hole in their lineup that they need to address.

As far as putting a drive in the core, it’s experience, you can’t cost reduce a hard drive, it’s a $50 overhead Sony will always have, sticking with flash RAM on the other hand, in a years time MS could offer an 8-20Gb flash drive/memory card for $20-$30.

I feel that the PS3 version of this game also has an advantage in that you can play it on your PS3 via Remote Plat on your PSP.

And that is very nice to have.

With the remote play, do you have to be wirelessly connected to the PS3, ie is it run like a remote terminal session, or does the game run on it’s own?

AFAIK you have to be connected to the PS3, over a network or an internet connection.
