Yahoo Recommends not Buying a PS3… DS3Battery Lazygamer

Yahoo, the definitive source for all video gaming information, world class beer, exceptional breasts and general life skills have placed Sony’s PS3 on their Christmas Grinch list – a list of products that ought to be avoided because their cost-to-run is higher than it originally anticipated.

The reason they reckon you should avoid Sony’s gaming behemoth? It’s not the games, it’s certainly not the hardware reliability and it’s not the fact that Kaz Hirai seems to live an a different planet. No, their beef with the PS3 is the longevity of the battery in its Dual Shock controllers.

In the original article, which has now been amended the Yahoo writer made it seem as if the DS3 controllers were disposable – and needed to be replaced at $55 a pop. “Unlike its competitors, which use replaceable AA batteries, the PS3’s remote control is glued shut. When the battery goes, Sony customers have to blow $55 on a new controller”

While one could ostensibly argue that they meant that once the battery no longer accepts a charge that the entire controller be replaced – which isn’t entirely true but is obviously much simpler and cheaper than replacing the battery (which is detailed on page 19 of the support manual, by the way), they failed to mention in the original article that the DS3 had a built in, rechargeable battery at all.

In a video, the writer of the article reiterated her point saying that the battery problem was a potential “technological Armageddon.” I really don’t think it’s quite that severe, but I’d like to be able to replace the DS3 battery with something that lasts a bit longer, like Sanyo Eneloops or something.

Yahoo have since added a disclaimer to the article, stating their general incompetence, but I think we should all give them a a nice, slow applause anyway.

Haha thats brilliant, I can just imagine this two bit tard, running the battery flat and not realising that its rechargable. Pathetic.
I was actually just reading a game review on IOL, where the guy clearly had no clue about gaming.
Who hires these people?

I think there was a link in the comments to a place where you can buy a replacement battery for <$5… which is cheaper than a normal rechargeable battery anyway

Bwahahahaha… some people are quite obviously tools. On a side note though, for interest sake. I’ve noticed that the PS3 controller holds longer than the XBox. Every freaking time I start up my AC2 I have to plug in my XBox controller, while the DS3 keeps on going. Anyone else noticed this, or are my XBox’s batteries just busy dying?

The Batteries in the plug and charge kit die after a while – mine lasted about 2 years (at about 1 charge every 2 weeks) before constantly needing to be plugged in to work.

I heartily recommend the Eneloops as entioned in this post. Great batteries that just seem to keep on going…and going…and going.
