US Air Force buys 2,200 PS3’s… unfortunately not for gaming | |

The US Air Force already had 336 PS3’s sitting in a secret laboratory somewhere trying to solve world peace or blow up the world… one of the two, and they have worked so well that the government has agreed to purchase another 2 200 on top of that to beef up the Air Forces processing power.
Apparently the cell processor in the PS3 really is that good and with the PS3 being sold at under cost to try and gain market share it is possibly the most cost efficient way of getting yourself a super computer.
While this goes Sony fans obvious bragging rights over their Xbox and Wii enemies it does also give the afore mentioned enemies more reason not to believe the Sony sales figures. Though it would take a lot more than 2200 units to really affect the figures much.

I have a question, why do they HAVE to buy the PS3’s? why not just by the Cell processor’s and build their own version of a super computer?

I hope they didn’t buy 2200 PS3 Slims… AFAIK you can’t load Linux on them anymore, so they won’t be able to use them for anything other than gaming/media.
