Kaz speaks – Forza 3 is not a simulator & Damage modelling is easy | |

Kazunori Yamauchi the brains behind the Gran Turismo series has been talking about the game at the motoring extravaganza that is SEMA Las Vegas.
Some of the more interesting points he raises are that the current GT5 has been built from scratch over the last 5 years, it has cost $60 million to develop and GT6 is going to be published using the same engine so we can expect it to be completed much quicker.
In more controversial news Kaz states that damage modelling is easy, that GT5 will teach Formula 1 drivers some new tricks and Forza 3 isn’t bad but it’s not a driving simulator.
He also doesn’t feel it’s his job to sell the product and you can pick that up from his short responses to some of the questions he doesn’t really want to answer.
GT5 is releasing in Japan in March 2010 with other regions following after that. Check out the entire interview through the link below.

Yeah. Only arcade devs do tire roll physics and spend hours on the McLaren simulator

“Have you played Forza Motorsport 3?
I was watching the guys at our company trying it out in the office. I tried it a little bit. It’s very similar in a lot of aspects to Gran Turismo. Some base components of the game are very different from Gran Turismo. It’s a little bit different from what a simulator is. You can feel it when you drive it.”
That could be a compliment as well.

I agree with him in the sense Forza 3 is not a simulator. Dont get me wrong, the cars drive well, but It’s still an arcade racer.
Any game when you automatically start in 8th place and get dropped onto a track without doing a practice or qualifying, and then only have like 3 laps get from 8th to first against your opponents is an arcade racer.

We don’t know in what way its different. His statement is too ambigious.

well done, those are all arcade racers. While Forza 3 seems more realistic, it’s still not a simulator.
I could write a 10 page essay on why Forza 3 is not a simulator, but unfortunately you need to drive a simulator to know what one is.

@ Atomic: you can do qualifying races and set the amount of laps you want to do mate… Maybe try it sometime.

Here below (in brackets, with some facial expressions *happy face*) are my interpretations of what Kaz’s ‘real’ answers to these questions were, since it’s quite ambiguous, and it’s apparent that he’s trying his best to casually downplay everything Turn 10’s achieved with Forza 3.
Have you played Forza Motorsport 3?
I was watching the guys at our company trying it out in the office. I tried it a little bit. (Read: We got it recently and we’re all really impressed, I’ve only played it a bit because the guys keep hogging the 360.

It’s very similar in a lot of aspects to Gran Turismo. (Read: Just like our racing GAME theirs is also a racing GAME.
Some base components of the game are very different from Gran Turismo. (Read: Our game is on PS3 and theirs is on XBox360.
It’s a little bit different from what a simulator is. You can feel it when you drive it. (Read: Games are different from simulators.

That is going a bit to far saying that Forza 3 is not a simulator, And if damage modeling is so easy why does Foraz 3’s damage look so much better than GT5 in all those vids I mean the car hits the wall but bounces of without a scratch.
And GT5 could really use a Car sound overhaul. I would probably still buy the just because of my love of cars, i also have Forz3. It’s like Lamborghini saying that farrari cars are good but not that good at taking a corner, they are both brillant cars….SO STOP COMPLAINING.

While it may not be the most true simulation racer eve, what would GT fans, who say Forza 3 is not a simulation game, consider a racing simulation game to be?
Point form would be great :)
