CES 2010 : Many PS3’s Sold This Holiday Ps3Slimfirreals Lazygamer

This holiday season past (boo!) was expected to be a bumper one for the Playstation 3, thanks largely to the launch of the reduced cost PS3 Slim – and the stellar line-up of games the system has on offer.

At CES, resident Sony space cadet Kaz Hirai confirmed just how well the PS3 had done this holiday – and it’s a sizeable 76% increase over the previous year.

According to Hirai, 3.8 million PS3s found new homes over the festive season, with 1.7 million of them being sold in the US alone.Of course, that does mean that Sony just made a loss of one hundred and fifty two million dollars. Let’s hope software sales are enough to recoup that quickly.

Did you become a PS3 adopter this Christmas? If so, tell us why. Is it the newer, much more affordable price, the games, the media capabilities, the free online play, or have you just had it up to your eyeballs with a constantly failing Xbox 360?

Ah! I would have young uberutang… had I not gotten my PS3 slim a few months ago. As for the reasons, I think you’ve summed them up very well.

I’ve got a PS3, a Wii and a 360 now. Between my house mate and I, we have about 50 360 games and about 30 PS3 games and 6 Wii games. For the last month, I have used my PS3 for Uncharted only, my Wii for Okami only. Combined that has been about 10% of my gaming time.

But every time I want to play online, the 360 is just the more user-friendly and overall enjoyable choice. I want to like the PS3, but its Network just fails horribly in comparison to Liv (even considering I pay for it)

Oddly, (and this is just my own opinion from my own experiences) I found the xbox live userbase to be the most vile. Sure you have the occasional creepy guys with female avatars frequenting PS Home, or the flurry of homophobic jocks on both systems, but nothing tops being called the most disgusting racial slurs on live during Halo, Gears and MW2 matches.

As for how PSN compares to Live, I used to get annoyed with the occasional disconnects from PSN, but then I realised the same is true for Live. PSN probably has more disconnects per gaming session (I wish someone could have a look at this, to see if it’s true), but Live still remains a paid service, with the bulk of goodies going to the yanks. If you’re an American, it’s definitely worth its subscription fee, but for the rest of the unsupported world, it’s more akin to pissing in a bucket and calling it wine.
