Microsoft Layoffs – Update

Microsoft Layoffs Update microsoft 1 thumb thumb Lazygamer

We have already reported  that Microsoft was sending 5000 employees home with their last paycheck soon. Word has just come in saying Aces Game Studio, they made the Flight Simulator games, were amongst the casualties and will be closed completely.

Does this mean the death of the Flight Sim games? No, says Microsoft PR person Kelda Rericha. She said (via IGN) “We are committed to the Flight Simulator franchise which has proven to be a successful PC based game for the last 27 years. You should expect us to continue to invest in enabling great LIVE experiences on Windows, including flying games, but we have nothing specific to announce at this time.” If its so ‘proven’ and ‘successful’, why did you kill the studio that made it?

While Aces Game Studio didn’t have any useful impact of game enjoyment, its sad to see yet more people suffer in this recession. Good luck to you all.

I have a feeling that Microsoft is consolidating a lot of
these into just one game brand, Microsoft game studios, and killing of the semi independent game studio to cut on overheads, like with Esemble they will most likely hire they people they want into Micosoft game studios.

Remember flight simulator, is not as big as “gears” etc, and only sell 300 000 – 500 000 a year every year.
So they have constant cash flow, but not revenue like the big “Console” games. Still remember playing MFS on a Oliveti M24 in 1987.

Now if they can put this on a console with it’s own unique flight sim game pad as big as a keyboard they might expand the audience, as with any sim only a dedicated few will use it, and in this case a lot of pilots.
