NPD February Figures – 360 Snaps up First Place

NPD February Figures – 360 Snaps up First Place 360Shot Lazygamer

American stat-trackers NPD have released their fabulous February findings – and for only the 2nd time since the Wii’s launch in 2006, the Xbox 360 was the top-selling home console in the region.

While the folks in Redmond are obviously doing a happy dance, there’s probably a good reason for their victory. US supplies of both the PS3 and the Wii are constrained. Still it IS a victory – Both the 360 (up 90 000 units from Jan) and the PS3 ( up 83 200 units) actually saw an increase in sales over January, with the Wii being the only one that saw a significant sales drop. Compared to last year’s February figures, the Wii is in sharp decline – 397,900 units, down from 793,000 in 2009.

I’d still like to have seen the figures if the Wii and PS3 were in regular supply though. Figures after the jump.

FIFA World Cup South Africa Trailer FifaWorldCupSouthAfricaLady thumb Lazygamer

The headline pretty much says it all… but since it’s my rule that there needs to be a decent amount of text I guess I could also tell you that the music is awesome and the fact that there is a huge videogame based on a South African event is fantastic.

For those that are interested the song is called Wavin’ Flags by K’naan.

3 Year Old Killed in gun Accident, It’s the Wii’s Fault, apparently. guns Lazygamer

Three-year-old Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan was killed in what can only be called a very unfortunate tragedy. She shot herself in the abdomen after apparently mistaking a loaded gun for a Wii gun controller.

According to the Sheriff on duty, Terry Ashe : The child had been playing a Nintendo Wii video game, Ashe said. The game’s controller was shaped like a gun that looked very similar to the real handgun, which her stepfather had put on a table in the living room. Ashe said the girl pulled the gun off the table and it went off.

Nintendo not releasing anything major this year

LazySAGamer - March 5th, 2010 at 11:30 am - 203 Views - No Comments (be the first)

Cammie Dunaway

Nintendo of America’s Cammie Dunaway has been chatting to Gamesbeat about the Wii’s performance in 2009 and what they expect in 2010.

Cammie has come out and said that 2009 was a stellar year and they don’t expect to beat or even match those figures this year. With the Wii in its 5th year it’s not surprising that it will start slowing down a bit but normally if a company has something huge (Project Natal, Arc) then they can expect sales to spike once more.

The Games as Art Debate – Is it Over?

The Games as Art Debate – Is it Over? Tate Lazygamer

There’s been a much debate, between erudite intellectual types as to the merits of video games as a form of art. Roger Ebert, famously, sits as the most vociferous opponent to the medium being considered high art. It’s something that could be debated endlessly and tirelessly from both sides.

Tate Britain, the National Gallery of British Art, may have put an end to the debate – as they’ll be hosting an event to showcase the finer side of gaming this Friday, March 5.

If Games Were Candy Bars

BioChoc--article_image

Last year, GamesRadar envisioned videogames as – instead of interactive experiences – delicious confectionary treats. This year they’ve done the same, based on reader submissions. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, but were these real, I’d have to try every single one of them. The mock-ups they’ve created look pretty damned enticing – so much so that i think somebody’s missed their vocation.

Take a look at more after the jump, and see if you can come up with something equally delicious.

Games Invite Players to Make Pacts with the Devil, Says Family Newspaper Satan Lazygamer

There’s always something for fundamentalist religious zealots to use as a scapegoat for the perceived societal moral decline. Throughout history, all manner of things have pinpointed by extremists as the source of evil; Books, Music, Film, TV, and the scapegoat du’jour – videogames.

According to The bulletin, A Philadelphia-based family newspaper, we’re being inundated with “satanically-themed video games that target God and Christianity, invite players to make pacts with the devil, and elevate Satan to hero status”

The biggest problem with the Wii according to Nintendo is a misconception

The biggest problem with the Wii according to Nintendo is a misconception HardcoreWii thumb Lazygamer

The most common complaint about the Wii is that it doesn’t have any real hardcore games and cannot rally satisfy that true gaming desire.

Nintendo however thinks this is a misconception and points to the fact that you will be able to get a AAA title next month to satisfy any hardcore gaming desires.

Sonic Fans : We’re a Bunch of Retards sonicFacepalm Lazygamer

Sonic 4 is looking , judging by the brief teaser and leaked screenshots, like a return to form for the speedy blue hedgehog. The fact that Dimps, the fellows behind the Sonic rush games on the DS is developing it gives me even more confidence.

Sonic fans aren’t quite as convinced, and have demonstrated themselves to be dumber and more extremist than even the most die-hard PS3 fanboy.

No Wii replacement anytime soon CammieDunaway thumb Lazygamer

Nintendo’s Cammie Dunaway has been talking to Gamespot at the Nintendo Media Summit about the Wii’s successor or lack thereof.

According to Cammie (keep wanting to call her Faye) Nintendo are eyeballing the success of PS2 and are wanting to copy that which means we should be preparing ourselves for a really long lifespan.

Dude Creates Ghetto Wii-Mote Gun Controller

Dude Creates Ghetto Wii Mote Gun Controller WiiGuns Lazygamer

Besides being a generation behind in terms of hardware, the Nintendo Wii, complete with motion controllers and all, should be at the forefront of console shooters.

In reality, it just isn’t. While there have been a few attempts at the genre on the Wii, none have gone so far as to really stand out and feel like something special. The bloke who sent this video to Engadget seems to have a different idea though.

What he has done, is create pistols for the Wii that have all of the buttons included on the gun, as well as directional movement controls, the nunchuck sensor and even the ability to use it with either hand.

This is just downright nifty. Maybe there is hope for Wii shooters after all. Video after the jump.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 lands in June, Metroid: Other M in Q3 MarioKnife Lazygamer

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released on the 11th of June 2010 in America so I guess we can expect it to land locally a week or two after that if everything goes to plan.

The other major Nintendo title this year, Metroid: Other M is currently scheduled for Q3 which would make it around August I guess.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Gameplay Trailer SMG2 thumb Lazygamer

Super Mario Galaxy was, and still is, one of the best games I have ever played. Nintendo perfectly captured it’s target market with SMG and utilised the motion controlling ability of the Wii to perfection.

To say I am looking forward to the sequel is an understatement and when I was watching this video before posting this story my kids wandered past and instantly ran in to watch the video as well, 3 times…

Apparently we just have to get this game and from what I can see I find it hard to disagree with them. The new abilities look awesome and I cannot wait to get some hands on time with this one.

Games That Should Never Have Been Made Header2 Lazygamer

Remember back when you were a young lad, you could play just about any videogame and be entertained? Now that we’re older and more astute, those very games that would once keep us occupied would now make you vomit a little on the inside of your mouth.

Every system is home to a few less-than-stellar titles, but after the jump you’ll find a list of games so mind-numbingly bad that you’ll wonder why they were even made in the first place.
